An organism composed of two genetically distinct types of cells. In case of knockouts a mouse in which some cells and tissues are derived from embryonic stem (ES) cells bearing an engineered mutation, while the others originate from stem cells present in the blastocyst into which the gene-targeted ES cells were introduced.
