The Beginnings of Manufacturing Management
The Industrial Revolution brought with it new processes, new products and new management problems. Before the industrial revolution most production occurred in small workshops employing few skilled people using hand tools and craft methods (Chandler, 1977). With the industrial revolution, workshops evolved into integrated factories using power-driven machinery attended by large numbers of lower-skilled workers performing increasingly specialized tasks.
