An analysis method that extends the birth and death type analysis to queueing systems with Erlangian service or interarrival times. Since an Erlangian variable is the sum of independent and identically distributed exponential random variables, the method of stages increases the state space to coincide with the underlying exponential random variables and solves the resulting system of equations using generating functions. Queueing theory.
