Entries in this volume of the Encyclopedia of Earth Science illustrate the very wide range of topics within the scope of applied geology . The following are criteria for inclusion in the lists: national organizations of the United States and Canada; international organizations with three or more countries represented in the membership; and selected United States, Canadian, and international meetings that have been held for succeeding years. Short courses and workshops are excluded, as are local, state, provincial, and regional organizations and those that are sections of national societies. Useful sources of information on these organizations and their publications are the Union List of Geologic Field Trip Guidebooks of North America (Geoscience Information Society, 1978) and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin.
