Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Earth Science ((EESS))

In its original meaning, the term “syntaxy,” coined by Ungemach (1935b) by analogy with “epitaxy” (q.v.), referred to the oriented intergrowth of two polymorphic forms of one and the same chemical substance in which the ratios of corresponding cell edges are rational. As an example of syntactic intergrowth, two (or more) polymorphs of silicon carbide can crystallize together in a single edifice, in which a cell (simple or multiple) of one polymorph nearly coincides in shape and size with a cell of another polymorph. This is a case of three-dimensional structural control. Another example is provided by coquimbite and paracoquimbite , Fe2(SO4)3·9H2O.

Syntactic intergrowth also occurs with constituent substances that are chemically different, and the meaning of syntaxy has been extended accordingly (Donnay and Donnay, 1953). In the series bastnaesite (CeFCO3)– parisite (2CeFCO3·CaCO3) – roentgenite (3Ce FCO3·2CaCO3) – synchisite (CeFCO3·CaCO3)– vaterite (CaCO3), syntactic intergrowth has...
