Myndus crudus was first described by Van Duzee in 1907. The North American forms were designated by Caldwell in 1946 as members of the genus Halpaxius Fowler. It has been found from Florida south to Venezuela and west to Panama, central Mexico and the southern tip of Baja California. This insect has become prominent because it has been implicated and proved as the vector of lethal yellowing (8;LY(9; of coconut palms (8;Cocos nuciferus L.(9;. LY was first reported in Jamaica in 1891. Since then, it has spread to the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Florida. Similar diseases also were found in East and West Africa. This planthopper spends its entire immature stages in the field in the thatch layer and on the roots of grasses such as St. Augustine (8;Stenotaphrum secundatum Kuntz(9;, bahia (8;Paspalum notatum Flugge(9;, centipede (8;Eremochloa ophiuroides Hack(9;, bermuda (8;Cynodon dactylon Pers.(9;, paragrass (8;Panicum purpurascens Raddi and P. bartowense...
