In the atmosphere, gasses such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone and most refrigerants can absorb solar radiant heat energy reflected by the ground. The greenhouse effect has been more significant in recent history than in the past. The increase in greenhouse gases has exacerbated the greenhouse effect and is a cause of global warming. The UN-initiated ‘Kyoto Protocol’ recommends measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
