Synonym: Gondwanaland

Gondwana is also known as the southern supercontinent, and it was an ancient supercontinent in the southern hemisphere. It is named after the old kingdom of Gondwana in central India. In the Indian Peninsula, there is a rock unit called the ‘Gondwana System’, which consists of rocks ranging from 300-million-year-old Carboniferous moraine strata to a 200-million-year-old Jurassic coal system. Similar rock systems and fossils have been found in all of the continents in the southern hemisphere. Based on the similar characteristics and other evidence, this supercontinent was given the name Gondwana. Some scientists have suggested that some parts of this supercontinent are early Palaeozoic or even Mesozoic in age, whereas others insist that it is late Palaeozoic in age.
