Global Geopark Expert
During the 30th International Geological Congress in 1996 (Beijing) and the 31st International Geological Congress in 2000 (Brazil), a geopark expert committee was established. The committee comprised 14 members, who were mainly members of the International Geological Correlation Programme (IGCP) from Latin America (2), Africa (2), Asia/Pacific (3) (Xun Zhao was China’s representative), and Europe (6). In 2005, the UNESCO Earth Science Division was restructured to become the Ecological and Earth Science Section. Subsequently, a Global Geopark Bureau was established with seven members, including Patrick McKeever, Nickolas Zouros, Guy Martini, Xun Zhao, Ibrahim Komoo, Marie-Luise Frey and Sylvie Giraud. A group of geopark experts was also recruited to assist in the operations of the Global Geopark Network, including site inspections of aspiring geoparks and geoparks being revalidated.
