Geoparks can be classified according to their management, sizes and nature. There are four types of geoparks in China based on their management, namely, global, national, provincial and county (city) geoparks. There are also four classifications based on their sizes, including very large (≥500 km2), large (100–500 km2), medium (20–100 km2), and small (≤20 km2). The background of a geopark can also be used to determine its type. There are seven types of geoparks based on the park’s background and nature, including the stratigraphy, geological structure, mineral and mining, fossils, geomorphology, water bodies and environment.
