Arch-Type Sandstone Landscape

This is a representative sandstone landscape. Arches National Park in Utah, USA, is the most typical example, and abundant and concentrated arches form this unique landscape. The park contains more than 700 arches at various stages of development. These natural arches, caves and stone windows have strange and varying shapes and different sizes. Among them is the world’s longest and highest natural arch, which is 32 m tall and has a span up to 89 m long. Some small caves and rock windows are so small that they do not allow a single person to pass through. Some look like a pot handle, and others are similar to an arch bridge or flying arch. The colours range from purple, red, brown, and light yellow to milky white, and the hues continually change with time, climatic changes and variations in light. The rock that forms these arches is the orange-red sandstone of the Jurassic Entrada Formation, which overlies the salt strata of the Paradox Formation. The salt strata collapse easily...
