The ‘National Geopark Planning and Technical Requirements’ of the Ministry of Land and Resources include provisions specifying the need for research and research plans. Considering the available resources and management capabilities, problems associated with geopark development must be addressed with short- and long-term research projects. Project proposals with estimated budgets, methodologies, expected results, publications and final applications are available for approval and funding by the local, provincial or national authorities. Every geopark is expected to have one ongoing research project operating throughout the year. The research priorities of newly established geoparks are studies of the formation and evolution of the geology and geomorphology and comparisons with similar locations in other parts of China or around the world.
