The geopark is located southeast of Cottbus, Germany, northwest of Dresden and west of Green Mountain, Poland. It became a member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2011. The geopark runs from Poland into Germany across the Nice River, which is the national border. The section in Saxony, Germany, is located in the settlement of Sorbow. The Furst-Puckler Park in the area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. In addition, the Nochten mining area has been listed as a geopark based on the advancing moraine landscape. The Muskau Arch is a major scenic site in the park and is shaped like a horseshoe that is 22 km long from east to west and 20 km long from north to south.
