Apuan Alps Geopark, Italy

This geopark is located in the transitional zone between the Central European and Mediterranean Biogeographical Areas. It has an area of 494 km2 and became a global geopark in 2011. The geopark includes the Apuan Alps Regional Park and the surrounding area in the Apuan Alps. It extends from the northwestern corner of Tuscany in central Italy to the northern end of the peninsula. The geopark is home to many endemic species and contains interesting rocks, minerals, fossils, and tectonic structures. This area is also known for its beautiful marble, deep gorges and huge caverns. It has attracted millions of visitors since the sixteenth century.
