Fujiyama Volcano Landscape

Fujiyama is the highest mountain in Japan and is a world-famous volcano. Located in southern Central Honshu Island, it is 80 km from Tokyo and is part of the Fuji Hakone Izu Park. Fujiyama Volcano is a relatively young dormant volcano. It has erupted 18 times since 800 A.D., most recently in 1770. Volcanic gas emissions are on-going. Fujiyama is made up of eight peaks with 5 lakes formed by volcanic activity in its northern foothills. The mountain is a famous tourist area. It stands above the wilderness and, because of its conical shape and year-round snow cover, it appears sacred and solemn. The area between an elevation of 2,000 m to the foothills is extremely scenic. People in Japan feel a sense of accomplishment when they climb Fujiyama. The crater attracts numerous tourists to climb, as is reflected in a Japanese poem: ‘This towering peak is so elegant, like an interesting monument; the eternal wind blows without a break while it looks like a lotus of jade’ (Fig. 14).
