The Antarctic Plate has Antarctica at its centre and includes the surrounding oceanic basins. Because the Antarctic Plate is separated from the adjacent plates by mid-ocean ridges, which serve as discrete boundaries, and also sits on Earth’s rotational axis, it is more stable than the other plates. Hence, it is always used as a reference point for calculations of plate velocities.
