An ancient volcano is a volcano that erupted long ago. Its nature and type can be determined through geological investigations. This type of volcano had been denuded, leaving an exposed neck, and the original crater is usually absent. Typical examples are Mesozoic volcanoes that have been deeply eroded, exposing the structure of the volcanic base.
