These mountains are located on the border between the Veneto region and the Trentino Alto Adige region in northeastern Italy. The core protection area covers 1,359 km2. The Dolomites are part of the northern Italian Alps and contain 18 peaks higher than 3,000 m. The region has outstanding diversity of mountain views, including the iconic landscape types of international geomorphological significance, such as peak clusters, peak needles, rock walls, glacial landforms and karst landscape systems.
