Purple amethysts with transparent and flawless properties are valuable as gems. Amethysts are popular and inexpensive gemstones. The purple colour is caused by manganese and titanium. Amethysts are mainly found in cavities of volcanic rock and pegmatite. Brazil is most famous for mining amethyst (Fig. 13).
