Danxia-type landscape

This is a representative type of sandstone landscape found in the subtropical moist region in southern China, where the parent rock is Middle and Upper Cretaceous red terrestrial facies sandstone. It is a collective landform that includes features such as red cliffs, mesas, stone walls, rock peaks, stone pillars, canyons, gorges, stone corridors and caves formed by the combined effects of fluvial erosion, corrosion and gravity collapse. This landscape is represented by Danxia Mountain in Guangdong Province. This landform was first discovered and described in geomorphological terms by the geologist Mr. Feng Jinglan in 1928. In 1939, Chen Guoda proposed the term ‘Danxia mountain terrain’, which was later revised to ‘Danxia Landform’ (Fig. 5).
