This site is located in the Mopti district in east-central Mali near the border with Burkina Faso. Its core protection area covers 4000 km2. The Bandiagara Precipice is an outstanding cliff and sandstone landscape that is dotted with magnificent buildings (e.g., houses, warehouses, altars, shelters, and public gathering places (‘Tokuna’)). Today, many ancient social artefacts (masks, banquets, religious rites, and party ceremonies related to ancestral worship) can still be seen in the local area. Bandiagara is valuable for scientific research in geology, archaeology and ethnology. Due to its natural features, it is one of the most beautiful sites in West Africa.
