Chelonians have round and flat bodies, where the soft muscles and organs are enclosed between the carapace and plastron. The head, neck, tail and four legs can be pulled into the shell. Their carapace and plastron are commonly preserved as fossils. Chelonian fossils such as the snake-necked turtle (Chelodina siebenrocki), ancient Chinese turtle, Nanxiong turtle (Nanhsiungchelys wuchingensis), tortoise and pitted shell turtle (Anosteria) have been found in southern and eastern China (Fig. 26).
