Air Pollution Index (API)
The pollutant concentration determines the air quality of the environment. High concentrations of pollutants can have severe negative impacts on the ecological environment and humans. Short and long-term air qualities are important in determining the liveability of a city. Air pollutants include soot, total suspended particulate matter, respirable suspended particulate matter (floating dust), nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone and volatile organic compounds. Carbon dioxide is not considered a pollutant.
