Western Caucasus, Russia
This site is located in Krasnodar Kraiin the Caucasus region of Russia, near Georgia, 50 km northeast of the Black Sea. It has a core protection area of 2,989 km2. The Western Caucasus Mountain Reserve is one of the last large mountains in Europe that has not been significantly affected by humans. The sub-alpine and alpine meadow areas are foraging places for wild animals. The undisturbed mountain forests extend from the lowlands to the high subtropical mountains and are a unique natural landscape in Europe. The heritage site has an extremely diverse ecosystem structure that nourishes the important local flora and fauna and is the birthplace and re-introduction area of the European mountain bison.
