This site is located in Egypt’s Fayoum Province, 80 km west of the capital, Cairo, in the western desert. The unique and dry desert environment preserves the traces of the early evolution of life. The fossils represent an important stage in biological evolution: the evolution of whales from terrestrial animals into mammals that live in the ocean. These palaeontological relics explain this evolutionary process. The fossils vividly display the life forms and lifestyles of the transitional whales. The number of whale fossils, their burial concentration, and their preservation quality are all excellent.
