Virunga National Park is located in North Kivu Province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo adjacent to the borders with Uganda and Rwanda. It has a core protection area of 7,900 km2. The park hosts an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Rwenzori at elevations of over 5,000 m and from lava plains to the savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. Mountain gorillas are found in the park, approximately 20,000 hippopotami live in the rivers, and birds from Siberia spend their winters in the park.
