These two reserves, which are located along the border between Costa Rica and Panama, are commonly referred to as ‘friendship national parks’, and they cover a core protection area of 5,678 km2. The location of this unique site, which was affected by Quaternary glaciers, has allowed the fauna and flora of North and South America to interbreed. Tropical rainforests cover most of the area.
