This is a type of volcanic eruption named after the Surtsey Volcano near Iceland. It is a phreatomagmatic eruption caused by the contact of magma or the heat of magma with cold water. The eruption can include a basal surge and the accumulation of fallen ash to form features such as tuff rings, tuff cones or low flat craters.
