Škocjan Caves are located in the borderland of southwestern Slovenia near Istria, Croatia, and have a core protection area of 4.1 km2. The exceptional system of limestone caves comprises collapsed dolines, approximately 6 km of underground passages with a total depth of more than 200 m, numerous waterfalls and one of the largest known underground chambers. The site, which is located in the Kras region (literally meaning karst), is one of the most famous in the world for studies of karst phenomena.
