Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka
This reserve is located along the border between Sabaragamuwa Province and Southern Province in southwestern Sri Lanka and has a core protection area of 85.6 km2. The reserve is the country’s last major area of primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the trees are endemic, and many are considered rare. There is also abundant endemic wildlife, especially birds. The reserve is also home to more than 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians.
