This park is also known as ‘St. Lucia Wetland Park’ and is located in the Indian Ocean coastal area of KwaZulu-Natal in the northeastern corner of South Africa. It has a core protection area of 2,395 km2. The numerous landform types include coral reefs, narrow sandy beaches, coastal sand dunes, lakes, swamps, and endless reeds and grassy wetlands. The interactions of different types of environments, combined with factors such as floods, coastal storms, and the transitional geography between the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, have made the heritage sites rich in species diversity and have also allowed the emergence and development of new species.
