The Silurian Period is the third period of the Palaeozoic Era; it lasted for 28 million years, from 444 to 416 million years ago. It was named by the geologist R.I. Murchison in 1839. The Silurian System includes the rocks that formed during the Silurian Period. Internationally, the Silurian System is subdivided into four series and seven stages, which are classified basing on graptolite fossils.
