These sanctuaries are located in the western Sichuan Plain in Sichuan Province, and the core protection area covers 9,245 km2. The Sichuan Giant Panda Habitat is home to more than 30% of the endangered giant pandas in the world. It includes seven natural reserves and nine scenic sites in the Songshan and Jiajinshan districts. Giant pandas are living fossils left over from the ancient tropical forest environments in the Palaeogene and the Neogene. These protected areas constitute the largest and most complete remnant of giant panda habitats.
