Shennongjia National Geopark, Hubei

Shennongjia National Geopark is located in the southern Shennongjia forest region in Hubei Province, and it covers an area of 954.9 km2. It became a national geopark in 2005. The area is part of the Tapa Mountains and has an average elevation of over 1,800 m, and Shennong Peak reaches 3,105 m. The geological features comprise glacial landforms, glaciers, flowing water and karst. In addition, there are albino animals and Palaeolithic sites where ancient people lived. The Dajiuhu Scenic Area is characterised by glacial landforms and alpine meadows. Tectonic landforms with erosional features are the main geomorphologic landscapes in the Banqiao Scenic Area. The Shennong Peak Scenic Area contains magnificent mountain landscapes, and the Tianyan Scenic Area illustrates the development of gorges and karst landforms. The Xiangxiyuan Scenic Area features gorges and river sources. Interesting fault structures and waterscapes can be observed in the Laojunshan Scenic Area.
