During the crystallization of magma, some early crystallized minerals cluster to form sheets or bands in the rock mass. Schlieren are different from xenoliths, and they tend to have unclear margins and a definite directional alignment. The mineral composition (e.g., biotite or hornblende) is often different from that of the country rock.
