This is a kind of desert landscape that is mainly composed of sand dunes and dune ridges. China’s deserts are located in Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Qinghai Provinces, and they cover a total area of 1,282,000 km2, which accounts for 13.4% of the total area of the country. The main deserts are the Taklimakan Desert and Kumtag Desert in the Tarim Basin and the Gurbantunggut Desert in the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang Province; the Badain Jaran Desert in western Inner Mongolia; the Mu Us Desert on the Ordos Plateau between Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi Province; and the Tengger Desert in the Helan Mountains (Fig. 6).
