Brown desert soil is found in the extreme temperate arid desert areas and develops on sandy gravel-bearing sediments left by the parent materials on slopes. The surface has obvious gravel layers, pore-like crusts, iron-stained layers, gypsum accumulation layers and salt-bearing layers. It is widely distributed in the Tianshan Mountains, west of Jiayuguan and in the Gobi Plain north of the Kunlun Mountains.
