Brodelboden Landscape

Synonym: Involution landscape

This is a landscape that forms by bending of sediment layers due to compaction, freezing and thawing. In permafrost, when the active layer freezes downwards, the unfrozen middle layer that contains water is blocked by the permanently frozen layers and will creep under pressure. As a result, a curling structure develops which is called a brodelboden (Fig. 27).
