Synonym: Cryptozoic Eon

The Pre-Phanerozoic Eon and Cryptozoic Eon are usually called the Precambrian Period or simply the Cryptozoic Eon. These terms generally refer to the prolonged interval of Earth’s history from the oldest rocks to the Cambrian Period. The term Cryptozoic is no longer used; rather, the Archaean Eon and Proterozoic Eon are the two main subdivisions of the Precambrian Eon, and the term Phanerozoic Eon applies to the time interval from the Cambrian Period to the Quaternary Period.
