Polje Karst Landscape

This is a landscape consisting of relatively flat valleys surrounded by peaks in areas of carbonate rocks. The term comes from the Serbian word ‘poljie’, which means field. This term is not related to the entire karst landform but rather only to the arable land in karst regions. It has been internationally recognised to generally refer to elongated or elliptical karst valleys formed by structural forces. In China, the term karst basin is almost identical to polje. The karst basins in Anshun and Xingyi, Guizhou Province, and Wenshan in Yunnan Province are large poljes (Fig. 26).
