This term refers to the continuous rainy weather that occurs in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River in the early summer of each year and extends eastward through the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula to southern Japan. Since the early summer season is the blooming season of Jiangnan plums, it is called ‘meiyu’ (or plum rain) in Chinese. This term has been used for thousands of years.
