Perlite is made up of acidic volcanic glass with abundant pearl-shaped cracks. It often contains small amounts of quartz or feldspar phenocrysts. Perlite contains 2–6% H2O+. Fluolite, which is very similar to perlite, contains more than 6% H2O+.
