Synonym: Ancient organisms

Palaeobionts is a general term for the creatures that lived on Earth during the past. This term in Chinese is mostly found in the Chinese and Japanese scientific literature. Most palaeobionts, such as dinosaurs, have already become extinct, but a few palaeobionts have survived, such the giant pandas (which lived as early as the Pleistocene) and ginkgo (which existed as early as the Middle Triassic). They are called living fossils. The study of palaeobiont evolution is called palaeontology (see “ Palaeontology”).
