Synonym: Phaeozem
Neutral black soil forms by the substantial accumulation of humus and water in temperate semi-humid steppe meadow vegetation. Its parent material is loess-like clay sediments, which are viscous but uniform in texture. It normally has no lime reaction. The humus layer is tongue-shaped and contains white silica powder, brown-black iron-manganese nodules and rust-coloured markings. It can be found in the central Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces in northeast China.
