Okapi Wildlife Reserve, Congo
This reserve is located in Oriental Province in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it has a core protection area of 13,726.25 km2. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve takes up 1/5 of the area of the Ituri Forest in northeastern Congo. The reserve and the Congo River are Africa’s largest natural water system. The reserve is a sanctuary for endangered primates and birds and is home to 5,000 of the last 30,000 wild okapis in the world. The dazzling and picturesque scenery in the reserve includes the waterfalls along the Ituri River and Epulu River. The area is the traditional home to the Mobutis and Efes Pygmy nomads.
