Nekton refers to free-swimming aquatic organisms (animals only), such as fish and whales. Palaeobionts such as the Palaeozoic amenoceras, the Mesozoic ammonites and syngnathus are all nektons. In addition to active swimming species, there are also semi-active or weak-swimming species, such as cockles and jellyfish. In addition, many animal larvae are good swimmers.
