Protected terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems have gradually transitioned from traditional completely protected areas to open, multi-functional actively protected areas with the aim of protecting ecosystem safety and biodiversity as well as promoting the sustainable development of resources. This concept will enable people to live in harmony with nature and ease the conflicts between protection and development and between nature reserves and the local residents’ activities and life. These new nature reserves are called biosphere reserves.
