National Park System, Kenya
Nature reserves and national parks make up the natural protection system in Kenya, and 20 nature reserves have been appointed as national parks. The first national park in the country, Nairobi National Park, was established in 1946. The current national park system includes savannahs, alpine snowy peaks, coral reefs, wildlife sanctuaries, and aboriginal reservations. Mount Kenya National Park and three other national parks in the Lake Turkana District were added to the World Heritage List in 1997 and 2001, respectively. Ecological tourism centred on wildlife sightseeing forms the foundation for the sustainable development of national parks and the surrounding communities. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) oversees the affairs concerning national parks in Kenya.
