Iran’s series of territorial reserve systems is composed of national parks, nature parks, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves. There are currently 7 national parks, 26 protected areas and 6 wildlife refuges in the country, including Golestan, Sisangan, Kavir, Kharturan, Tandooreh, Khojir, Sorkhe Hesar, Bakhtegan, Lake Urmia and Bambo. In 1966, Golestan National Park was the first national park to be established in Iran, and it was recognised as Iran’s first biodiversity reserve 10 years later.
