Marine facies are sediments, rocks, or rock strata that form in a marine environment. Based on the seabed topography and the water depth, marine facies can be subdivided into littoral facies, continental shelf facies, semi-deepwater facies and deepwater facies. The main characteristics are that the lithic facies have minimal variations, always contain abundant fauna fossils, and are mainly composed of clastics, clay, iron- and manganese-bearing rocks, siliceous rocks and carbonaceous rocks.
